The Hex-Dock: Engineering a Better Way to Carry Tools
Every tool in a kit exists for a reason, but the way we carry them is often an afterthought. For a long time, Allen wrenches have either been buried at the bottom of a toolbox or rattling around in a pocket, waiting to stab you the moment you lean over a machine.
I was tired of not having an easy, high-access way to keep my hex keys ready at a moment’s notice. When you’re in the middle of a setup or a teardown, having to stop and hunt for a 5mm wrench kills your momentum. That frustration is why the Hex-Dock exists.
The Material Standard: Why We Only Use PETG
In the 3D printing world, everyone starts with PLA. But PLA doesn't belong on a shop floor. Leave it in a hot truck or expose it to standard industrial chemicals, and it deforms.
We engineered the Hex-Dock exclusively in PETG. It provides the impact resistance and layer durability required for daily professional use, while maintaining the tight tolerances necessary for a mechanical fit. It’s a workhorse material for a workhorse environment.
Dialing in the "Bite"
The hardest part of designing a tool holster isn't the shape; it's the retention.
It has to hold the wrench securely enough that a bump against a CNC machine won't knock it loose, but it has to release easily enough that you aren't fighting your own belt to get a tool out. We spent hours in CAD dialing in the "bite"—the exact mechanical tension that allows a hex key to drop in securely and pull out cleanly. It’s a delicate balance, but getting that tolerance right is the difference between a cheap clip and a reliable piece of gear.
Building a 5S Ecosystem
The Hex-Dock isn't just a single clip; it’s the foundation of a modular system.
If you work in manufacturing, you know 5S (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain). We are applying those principles directly to the technician's belt. We're currently developing a pipeline of new modules utilizing our dovetail system, aimed at organizing the items everyone on the shop floor uses daily. The goal is simple: eliminate wasted movement.
The Custom Shop: Professional Identity
We offer custom branding on our docks for a very practical reason: professional identity.
When you run a shop, or when you are a specialist carrying gear into a client's facility, having your own name or logo integrated into your tools elevates your professionalism. It shows you invest in your setup. Plus, it’s the best way to ensure your gear doesn't "accidentally" migrate into someone else's toolbox.
